Jack's N Gauge Layout
Although it’s very much a work in progress, I thought I would send these pictures of my first attempt at a model rail layout. I’ll admit it’s a bit ambitious for a first time modeller but there’s nothing like jumping in at the deep end!
There have been times when I wish I had chosen something easier to start on but I’ve learned a lot as it progresses - not least of which is why-oh-why choose “N” gauge at my age and poor eyesight!
I’m currently attempting to built an N gauge coaling station from a Peco kit and the bits are extraordinarily small, so you can also add shaky hands to the list of reasons why a bigger gauge might have been a better plan.
The concept behind my design was that I would complete it in stages, with each stage, or board, being effectively a runnable layout with the addition of a temporary (universal) Loop Board. However, as I suffer the human trait of not quite finishing things off before moving on to the next, the first board is still not complete - requiring static grass and scenic finishes, even though I'm well into boards 2, 3 and even 4. I’ve included my layout sketch of the various phases, so anyone looking can see the direction I’m heading in.
Astute viewers might notice that, being a stickler for detail, I’ve even put some goldfish in the pond in photo 1 - which in N gauge is no mean feat!
Who knows, if Covid continues to limit our ability to enjoy travel in the great outdoors, this layout might actually get finished before the year is out.
